There is something special and unique about seeing a great work of art still in the same place that it was made, sometimes many centuries before. The way the sunlight falls on an altarpiece by Bellini or Caravaggio, the subtle humour of Veronese’s country house frescos, or the drama of trompe l’oeil ceiling by Mantegna or Michelangelo – we can understand and respond to them in a way which art in a museum just can’t replicate.  Tracking down such works – often in quiet, little-visited churches and chapels – has been one of the greatest pleasures of my travelling life. And the result is my latest book, Italy: in the Footsteps of the Great Artists, which explores explores the lives and works of the country’s most famous painters – in the towns and cities where they lived and worked. This talk will focus on some of my favourites and, I hope, inspire you to look at Italy and its art in a new light.

Nick Trend is a journalist and art historian. As Chief Culture Editor for the travel desk of the Daily Telegraph, he has spent nearly three decades writing about the world’s art treasures and has produced guides to many of the greatest museums and art collections. He has also worked on the curatorial staff at the National Gallery in London and has a degree in English Literature from Cambridge and a PhD in Art History from the University of East Anglia.
